Nomos' Editorial Policy and Publication Ethics
NOMOS Verlagsgesellschaft has a decades-long tradition of publishing works of the highest academic standards in the fields of law, social sciences and humanities. Including our imprints Ergon Publishing and Academia Publishing, we publish more than 1,000 books per year ranging from thoroughly reviewed theses and other academic publications to handbooks, commentaries and textbooks. Repeated funding of the Nomos eLibrary by the German Research Foundation (DFG) is just one proof of the excellency of our academic publishing program. We work closely with researchers and librarians to ensure that we meet their demands. According to rankings of academic publishers Nomos (as one of very few German publishers) is consistently rated as a top tier publisher, e.g. in the internationally reknown SENSE Ranking.
All our academic books are subject to a thorough review process, and dissertations or other theses must have been graded with the highest marks. In addition to this, most of our books are published within series that are edited by experienced scholars. The series’ editors are in charge of developing the overall concept and structure of the series and they review the manuscripts submitted. To ensure that the published works meet the required standard of quality, the series’ editors or the publisher may rely on external reviews by leading scholars in each respective field. These editors always ensure that reviewers are unbiased and qualified. The final decision regarding publication lies with Nomos’ editors. Nomos’ editorial staff usually have an academic background related to their respective field of editorial work.
Our editorial process and reviewing guidelines are made transparent for authors and reviewers. We aim to build trusting and long-term relationships with both our authors and the editors of series and journals. If any conflict of interest emerges, we will strive to resolve the conflict immediately.
To safeguard good scientific practice, every author is required by his/her publishing contract to comply with the rules stipulated by academic institutions. Should a case of plagiarism be detected, we will reject the submission in question and inform the author(s) and editor(s) concerned accordingly. If such a case should be detected after publication, we will stop the book’s distribution immediatley until the case has been cleared.
To ensure long-term archiving of and access to our publications we are cooperating with Portico.
We protect the copyright of our authors’ intellectual property.
Our data protection officer ensures that sensitive data is handled according to the requirements of the data protection laws.
We are a member of various industry interest groups and organisations such as GeSIG Netzwerk Fachinformation e.V. and the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels.
